Commager, Henry Steele
(1902-1998) Коммаджер, Генри Стил
Историк, педагог либерального направления, автор многочисленных крупных трудов по истории США. Получил образование в Копенгагенском и Чикагском [Chicago, University of] университетах. В 1929-36 преподавал в Нью-Йоркском университете [New York University]. В 1938-56 - профессор истории Колумбийского университета [Columbia University], в 1956-72 - профессор Колледжа Амхерста [Amherst College]. Подготовил к изданию важные сборники исторических документов: "Документы американской истории" ["Documents of American History"] (1934), "Голубые и Серые" ["The Blue and the Gray"] (1950) (документы времен Гражданской войны [Civil War]), труды по истории второй мировой войны. Автор серии книг по американской истории для детей. Среди других известных работ - "Рост американской республики" ["The Growth of the American Republic"] (1930-39; в соавторстве с С. Э. Морисоном [Morison, Samuel Eliot]), "Американское наследие" [The Heritage of America] (1939, в соавторстве с А. Невинсом [Nevins, Allan]), "Свобода, лояльность, несогласие" ["Freedom, Loyalty, Dissent"] (1954), "Содружество познания" ["The Commonwealth of Learning"] (1968), "Джефферсон, национализм и просвещение" ["Jefferson, Nationalism, and the Enlightenment"] (1974).
